The standards (flags) were a rallying point for each regiment. Both sides had very similar uniforms and it was (and is!) difficult to tell which side is which. Each regiment formed up, and reformed on its ensign. If the standard was lost soldiers did not know who to fight for, and would leave the field. The ensign would fight fiercely to protect his standard.
